Why CPE’s 4-on-1 Super-Value Math Class (for SAT, New PSAT, New ACT, & Level 1 Subject Test) Is a Great Idea

Dr. Yo’s 4-in-1 Super-Value Math Class is one of those rare gems that makes excellent sense for the vast majority of high school students. The problem is, most students and parents either don’t know that it exists, or they don’t immediately see how it can prove so tremendously beneficial in their particular case. The purpose of this blog post is to redress that unfortunate situation.

The concept underpinning the class is to offer high school students in grades 9-12 instruction and practice on the SPECIFIC BODY OF MATHEMATICAL MATERIAL most commonly covered on the most popular standardized tests—the PSAT, the SAT, the ACT, and the Math Level 1 SAT Subject Test—and, simultaneously, to reinforce material conventionally considered FOUNDATIONAL in most U.S. secondary school curriculums. CPE materials and texts have been updated to accommodate the new calculator-less PSAT section (in anticipation of the new calculator-less SAT math section rolling out in March 2016) as well as the new emphasis on the ACT.

Let’s face it: there is a LOT more math covered in 4 years of math classes that typically meet 5 days a week, every week of the school year, than can be tested on any single exam (particularly the SAT and ACT, where math is just one component among several). One of the great things about the class is that, using CollegePrepExpress’s Math Review Packet©, students’ attention is focused on the relatively NARROW SLICE of mathematical material that always shows up on standardized tests. Percent problems, average (arithmetic mean) problems, Pythagorean theorem and special right triangle problems, circle problems, cube problems—to name a few topics that ALWAYS show up—are covered in detail. We dig deep into this 12-page document full of highly useful notes Dr. Yo often refers to as “Spark Notes” for standardized tests. In class, Dr. Yo takes students through the packet, page-by-page, topic-by-topic, illustrating with examples exactly where and how the material pops up as test items.

Super-Value-Math-ClassSubjTestCover&MathPacketFor homework, students complete Math Level 1 Subject Tests from the College Board’s The Official SAT Subject Tests in Mathematics Levels 1&2 Study Guide and Princeton Review’s Cracking the SAT Math 1 Subject Tests 2013-2014. Students then receive instruction in class about every problem they got wrong or left blank, before moving on to new material from the Packet.

From an educator’s perspective, the most rewarding part of the class is seeing how, by focusing on this foundational mathematical material, students report their math GRADES—whether in Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, or Precalculus—improve as a natural consequence. Unwittingly, by learning and practicing this particular body of material, students are re-learning and reinforcing knowledge and skills that will raise their test scores in school, most importantly their final exams.

So PLEASE do yourself (or your kids) a favor and enroll in one of the two sections of this class each semester.

Prepare for new PSAT/SAT Math, ACT Math, SAT Subject Test Math, and raise your math grade and perform better on your math tests and exams. I hope now you understand why this really is a “SUPER-VALUE MATH CLASS.”
