Alisha, currently teaching AP US History at Loomis Chaffee School, grew up in West Hartford and is a graduate of Hall High School. She has a rich background in education and independent school and  college planning. Alisha is a proud alumna of The University of Michigan where she received her undergraduate degree in History and Political Science.  She then went on to attain her graduate degree in education from Teachers College at Columbia University.

Before joining CollegePrepExpress, Alisha was a high school history teacher at Simsbury High School for four years where she taught World History to 9th graders, American History to 11th graders and AP United States Government and Politics to 12th graders, a course that she created for the district. Alisha’s past tutoring experience includes work with students in study skills, reading comprehension and writing during her student teaching year at Stuyvesant High School in lower Manhattan and in her years working at Simsbury.

Alisha is “super psyched” to be working with CollegePrepExpress, where she began in the fall of 2011, and her students are already raving about her! She tutors both out of the CollegePrepExpress office at 38 Maplewood Ave. in West Hartford, her own home office at 122 Montclair Dr. in West Hartford, and online Alisha is also willing to meet with students in their homes, per private arrangement with each client.

Elena did well on her SSAT, finishing with a percentile rank of 97%. Thanks, Alisha, for your good work on that. Likewise, the interview went very well (according to the school). Thanks for getting Elena ready for that, too!

Alisha’s very warm, encouraging and supportive... also if you don't understand something she will explain the problem, sometimes by approaching it from a different angle.  And she makes sure your understanding is thorough, not just superficial.

Smart Summer Session:
 AP U.S. Review 2013

This class is intended for students who plan to take U.S. History in the fall, standard or AP, who might want to take or re-take the SAT Subject Test in U.S. History in the fall, and who want to get a head start on the class! This is a great course for first time AP history takers because it will provide students with the nuts and bolts of AP history classes, introduce them to the test and introduce the major themes of the course, both chronologically and thematically. We will use the AP U.S. History Exam as our anchor for topics and skills covered throughout the week, which will serve standard as well as AP history students. We will tackle topics most frequently covered on the Exam, work with Document-Based Questions (DBQs) and discuss specific topics covered in recent years, including Pre-Columbian and colonial America, The American Revolutionary Era, Economics, Society and Politics of Antebellum America, Manifest Destiny, The Civil War Era, Reconstruction, Industrial America and Urban Society in the late 19th Century, Populism and Progressivism, Emergence of America as a World Power, World War I, America Between the Wars (the Great Depression and the New Deal), World War II, Post War America, Urban Sprawl, The United States During the Cold War and Vietnam, Social Movements of the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and Post-Cold War America. Some time will also be devoted to tackling a U.S. History THESIS paper, how to use and cite sources, analysis and understanding of primary documents and political cartoons, and understanding AP Exam multiple choice questions.

Smart (AP) U.S. Mid-Year Review
January 13, 2013
(with option for private or small group
extra session on 1/11)

The US History Mid-Year Review Course is a one day, 4-hr session that will give students a comprehensive mid-year review through the lens of the AP Exam, though students need not be taking AP US to enroll. Students will have a chance to review content they have studied to this point and practice or brush up on their AP Exam skills, with the goal of achieving a 4 or 5 on the Exam in the Spring. We will focus on the skills needed for the AP Exam using only College Board multiple choice, free-response, and document-based questions to go though the material; a task that is often times difficult for classroom teachers to do as they try to get through the material.  At the end of the two evenings, students should feel prepared to take their mid-year exams, while, for those enrolled in an AP class, also continuing their prep for the AP Exam in May. This course is the first of two courses offered throughout the year in AP US History. The second in the series is offered in the spring before the AP Exam.
